There’s an exciting project that RAFT will be launching in January 2023. This is a project that will be easy to do, not too time consuming and will allow you to get research experience, tick key curriculum goals and build your CV. If you would like to be the trainee lead for your hospital, get in touch with your TRN or email us or RAFT directly.

Perioperative Blood Management

RAFT has teamed up with the NIHR BTRU (Blood Transfusion Research Unit) to create a project on Perioperative Blood Management. This is a topic of growing importance in light of current shortages of blood products. It will include an organisational survey of practice and an individual anaesthetist survey. We aim to evaluate how perioperative blood management services work across the UK and assess individuals’ opinions and practice. We hope to cover as much of the UK as possible so that findings are representative and of value to all perioperative health care providers. We would then also be able to identify some important QI points that trainees can take forwards if they so wish.

The study will start in January 2023 and trainee site leads will be responsible for completing the organisational survey and promoting all their anaesthetic colleagues to complete the individual anaesthetist survey. We anticipate that the organisational survey will take no more than a couple of hours to complete and answering some questions may involve contacting your perioperative team and blood bank team. At the end of the project collaborators will receive a certificate to thank them for their hard work and be included on collaborator lists in any future publications of this work.

More information can be found on the RAFT website.
